Our people are central to our continuing evolution as a global design practice. Driven by our core values we are creative and resilient. We provide opportunities to push the boundaries to realise every individual’s full potential.

Our leadership and vision gives our people the opportunity to create a positive impact.

Grow with us

We encourage continuous learning and development through a range of initiatives designed to support our people at every stage of their career.

We encourage creativity and curiosity in our Graduates. Our Graduate Program is designed as a valuable bridge between formal education and working life, equipping graduates with the tools, skills and experience for success. It also provides a supportive pathway to Registration as an Architect.

We provide students with opportunities to bridge the gap between university and professional practice while completing their studies.

We also support universities with scholarships and internships, including the Buchan Master of Architecture Student Prize with Curtin University.

Our formal Leadership Program prepares talented and driven individuals to transition from working in the business to leading the business.
Our Pathway Program supports the transition from 'mate to manager' building critical soft and project leadership skills.

We encourage all staff to join our mentoring program as a way to share knowledge, expand professional networks and gain new skills that support your career goals and aspirations.

Our performance management program includes annual performance appraisals and goal setting with regular check-in points, promotion reviews and salary reviews.

We offer a generous annual training allowance for self-directed professional development, an in-house micro-learning platform and ongoing internal and external education opportunities.
We support and subsidise our people to gain professional accreditations.

We encourage industry group and committee participation at all levels including AIA, EmAGN, SONA, PCA, NZIA, PCNZ. We also support those with university teaching positions and Industry award judging opportunities.

We support our people through industry recognition and awards programs.

We actively encourage our people to broaden their lived experience at Buchan through our 'open studio' policy.

In addition to inter-studio travel for project collaborations, we support staff with flexibility to combine personal travel and work in any of our studios. Inter-studio transfers are also considered.

Our alliance with Japanese architectural and urban design firm, Nikken Sekkei builds on our global connections. Our international secondment program offers the rare opportunity to live and work overseas supported by Buchan.

Designed to thrive

We’re committed to creating an environment where talent and creativity can thrive – professionally and personally.

We offer flexible working arrangements across our studios.

Our paid Parental Leave is 12 weeks for the primary carer, 3 weeks for partner.

In addition, our annual health programs include flu shots, blood donation drives, wellbeing events, sporting group participation and more.

We believe in a working life that's designed for creativity, connection and purpose through:
- A diverse program of studio, social and networking activities.

A sustainable future

We’re focused on designing a more sustainable future for our people and the planet.

We are committed to honouring First Nations peoples through design with our Reflect Reconciliation Action plan and our Te Ao Māori journey.

This includes our recruitment, selection and appointment to roles, training and development, remuneration and reward, retention of employees, forms of leave and flexible working arrangements, succession planning and company policies and procedures.

We are committed to ensuring integrity across our practice including though our anti-bribery, modern slavery and employment policies.

We are investing in the next generation of indigenous students through our multi-year university scholarships and internships including the University of Queensland Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Architecture Industry Scholarship and the Buchan Remote Placement Bursary Award with The University of Sydney.

What our recently registered architects say

“Having previously been registered overseas, gaining registration in Australia represents an important professional milestone. Completion of the EPA pathway with Buchan has formalised my credentials and strengthened my sense of belonging within the Australian architectural profession.”
Kristina Arsic Stojanovic

“Achieving architectural registration is a proud milestone. Working in experienced, collegiate teams reflects Buchan’s studio culture, making this achievement possible. The opportunity to work on prominent, high-calibre and diverse projects has profoundly shaped my experience as a graduate. Just as meaningful has been the journey alongside other ambitious graduates.”
Jarrod Argent

At Buchan, we encourage individual voices, and are building a workplace culture that champions equity, diversity and inclusion. This enables true design innovation, underpinned by our shared vision and values.

We are always looking to hear from talented people to join our team.
